Important changes start January 1, 2027

These changes may affect how you keep your health care coverage. Read your mail from the State of Michigan. It will tell you what you need to do.

New Work Rule

Starting January 1, 2027, some Healthy Michigan Plan members must meet a work rule to get or keep coverage.

What Counts?

  • Working
  • Going to school
  • Taking job training
  • Volunteering or doing community service

You may already meet the rule. You can also meet the requirement if you have a verified income of $580 or more a month. Some people do not have to meet it because of their age, health, family needs, or another reason allowed by the state.

How Many Hours Do I Need?

You may need to complete at least 80 hours in one month during the 6 months before your renewal. If you are applying for coverage, you may need to meet the rule in the month before coverage starts.

Will I Need to Report My Hours?

The state will first check the information it already has. The state will contact you if more information is needed. Follow the steps in the notice and reply by the due date.

Renew Medicaid Every 6 Months

Most Healthy Michigan Plan members will need to renew Medicaid every 6 months instead of once a year.

At renewal, the state checks if you still qualify. The state may ask about:

  • Your income
  • Who lives in your home
  • Your work, school, training, or volunteer hours
  • Any reason you may not have to meet the work rule

Even if you do not have to meet the work rule, you may still need to renew every 6 months.

Who May Be Excused from Reporting?

  • Pregnant or up to 12 months after giving birth.
  • A foster or former foster youth under 26 years old.
  • American Indian or Alaska Native.
  • A veteran with a rated disability of 100%.
  • A person with complex health needs that limit their ability to participate in required activities (medically frail).
  • A person in substance use treatment.
  • Already subject to work requirements for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, known in
  • Michigan as the Family Independence Program.
  • Already subject to work requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
  • A parent or caregiver of a dependent child 13 or younger.
  • A parent or caregiver of a person with a disability.
  • Recently released from jail or prison.
